Thyme Culinary Herb And Its Medicinal Value

Culinary use.
Thyme has a strong, piquant, lemony flavor lemon thyme (T. citriodorus). Strip the leaves from the stems and use in any dish especially chicken, meat and stews or fish, eggs and tomatoes.
Thyme leaves finely chopped can also be used to flavor dumplings, scones and bread. It also blends nicely with other herbs.
Thyme can bought fresh or dried and is available all year round.
Medicinal Use.
Thyme contains many active substances found to prevent disease and promote health.
When used as a tea, the high thymol (important essential oil) and anti-oxidant content have been found to have antiseptic and antifungal characteristics.
It has been used to clear coughs, cold, sore throats, sinus, flatulence, stomach ailments and indigestion.
Thyme herb can also be used as a mouth wash and in the treatment of gingivitis and caries.
It can also be used to treat athletes foot and worms. and to whiten teeth.
Thyme leaves are rich source of potassium, iron, magnesium, selenium calcium and manganese,
The rich source of iron found in Thyme is required for the formation of red blood cell formation therefore makes it ideal to use just before and during the female menstruation cycle.
Thyme herb also contains vitamins namely: Vitamin E, Vitamin K, Vitamin A, B-Complex vitamins and Beta Carotene
Ancient Egyptians used thyme during the embalming process. The Greeks used it as incense in temples and the Romans used it to purify homes.
